This position is assigned to the Facilities Management Service (FMS) at the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center in Florida. They serves as a Maintenance Mechanic (LOCKSMITH), WG-4749-10, responsible for performing a full range of advanced maintenance, repair, modification, installation, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance work on building systems, structures, utilities, equipment, fixtures, doors, hardware, and related infrastructure essential to the operation of a complex medical center. The Maintenance Mechanic performs journey-level maintenance mechanic duties involving multiple trades including carpentry, mechanical repair, plumbing, building systems maintenance, door systems repair, hardware installation, and structural maintenance. Work supports patient care operations, administrative functions, life safety systems, accessibility requirements, and facility infrastructure. The position also performs locksmith and security hardware duties as a secondary function in support of facility security, controlled access, patient safety, and protection of government property. They apply advanced technical knowledge and independent judgment to diagnose problems, determine corrective actions, plan work assignments, and complete repairs affecting critical medical center operations. Additional Duties Include But Not Limited To: Laying floor tile (tile, VCT, LVT, carpet, sheet flooring). Repairing chairs, tables, counters. Hanging bulletin boards, pictures, mirrors, fans, clocks, etc. Installing casters on desks, chairs, food carts, etc. Mounting paper towel holders, signs, comer guards, and toilet paper dispensers. Installing safety treads on steps. Measures, cuts and constructs using standard building materials. Independently plans and completes projects that involve constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses, and beams. Spacing, accuracy and fit are essential and structural soundness or appearance is important. Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs, and modifies routine mill work, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc. Performs work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness. Operate and use a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools. Operate and use a variety of tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications. Plan and lay out carpentry projects. Plans measure and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques. Projects involve constructing, altering, repairing, and/or modifying framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses, and beams. Spacing, accuracy and fit are essential, and structural soundness or appearance is important. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials using typical shop mathematics for complex and exact projects. Plan, measure, and lay out carpentry materials by interpreting complex or incomplete instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes. Installing ceramic or stone tile to include use of thin set or mud grouting methods for installation. May be used for walls, ceilings, and flooring. Installing drywall, to included taping, and floating. Material fire ratings and appropriate application and installation to preserve ratings. Limited plaster work on case openings, ceilings, walls, door frames, and various masonry. Mortar and concrete mixing to repair steps, walls, floors, ramps, roadways, and sidewalks. Application and use of structural steel, rebar applications, etc. Diagnoses malfunctions affecting building systems and determines appropriate repair methods. Reads and interprets blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, sketches, specifications, and manufacturer instructions to plan and execute work assignments. Repairs and maintains building components in patient care areas, clinics, administrative offices, utility spaces, warehouses, mechanical rooms, and support facilities. Responds to emergency maintenance situations involving facility systems, doors, hardware, equipment failures, accessibility deficiencies, and structural issues that could impact patient care, employee safety, security, or facility operations. Performs locksmith and security hardware duties involving installation, maintenance, repair, modification, and troubleshooting of locking systems throughout the medical center. Maintains facility key control programs, master key systems, restricted keyways, lock cylinders, locksets, panic hardware, exit devices, electromechanical locking devices, and related security hardware. Repairs, adjusts, and replaces locking devices integrated into doors, frames, and building systems. Evaluates security hardware deficiencies and determines corrective actions necessary to maintain controlled access and facility security. Coordinates with VA Police Service, Safety personnel, Engineering staff, and facility leadership regarding access control requirements, security upgrades, emergency lock changes, and key accountability programs.
