THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 5 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN (SSC), Position Description Number PDT6388000 and is part of the MA ANG 102nd IW, National Guard. This is a Non-Bargaining Unit position. The unit point of contact and contact phone for this position is: CMSgt Calvin Melvin at email; calvin.melvin@us.af.mil. Selected applicant MAY BE eligible for a recruitment incentive not to exceed (25%) of the annual rate of basic pay. 1. Plans and lays out work to be accomplished in the shop which is then completed by theindividual and lower graded worker(s). 25% 2. Installs, modifies, tests, repairs, and maintains transformers, converters, regulators, cables,switches, circuit breakers, mechanical and electronic systems, and other circuit elements found in substations. Adjusts relays and control equipment to obtain specified voltage, current, time delay,and other characteristics for appropriate holding, tripping, or other operational functions.Constructs and installs rigid conduits. Pulls in conductors, assembles bus bars, and phases out andconnects conductors. Cleans, adjusts, and repairs electrical equipment such as air and oil circuitbreakers and remote-control supervisory equipment. Checks condition of transformers, switches,capacitor equipment, and cables. Checks transformer operating temperatures and voltage atsecondary terminals and make repairs to defective, loose, or corroded connections. Directs, trainsand/or guides lower grade employees on a regular and recurring basis while performing therequired maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, diagnosis, repair, overhaul, replacement, andinstallation of high voltage distribution systems and equipment under their areas ofresponsibility. Ensure tasks are performed in compliance with National Electrical Safety Codes.Determines and uses procedures, materials, equipment, and sequences that are acceptable foraccomplishing assigned tasks; and comply with established codes and directives. Required to usetheoretical concepts to devise solutions for operational or repair problems.25% 3. Installs, modifies, connects, inspects, and repairs overhead and underground electricaldistribution lines. Services lines, breakers, disconnect switches, transformers, insulators,grounding systems, fuses, poles (metal and wood), relays, meters, lightning arresters, cathodicprotection systems, traffic lights, street and floodlight systems, airfield lighting systems, andpower supplies. Strings wires and hoists conductors up to the cross arms. Pulls wires to propertension or sag based on space, length, type, and size of conductors, prevailing temperature, andloading district. Installs and pull cable underground from source of feed-through ducts. Installspoles and replacement of cross arms. Provides technical direction and assistance to lower-gradeor less experienced employees as required. Ensure tasks are performed in compliance withNational Electric Safety Codes. Almost always perform repairs. modifications, connections,and/or installations in a timely, efficient, and complete manner. Ensure tasks performed followaccepted trade practices and procedures. 25% 4. Troubleshoots distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment. Makesemergency repairs and substitutions of power lines and equipment, sometimes working ondistribution systems when they are energized. Troubleshoot overhead and underground cablesystems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, electrolysis damage, capacitance imbalances, or cablebreaks. Locates and marks electrical underground utilities prior to excavation. Checks groundwire connections and cables for cracks, breaks, and corrosion. Routinely provides reliabletroubleshooting of distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment to locate andcorrect the causes of outages and improper operations. Locates breakdowns and trouble spots ondistribution lines by power failure reports, line inspections, and use of various electrical testinginstruments. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules andregulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment. Frequently works on high voltageelectrical systems when they are "hot," using necessary safety equipment, methods, andprecautions. Use and assure proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing, applyingestablished safety rules and regulations to minimize minor violations and to avoid majorviolations due to employee error or negligence. Inform the supervisor of any accident and/ordamage to supplies or equipment or of any observed unsafe practices and/or procedures. 15% 5. Uses and maintains various hand and power tools and test equipment such as oscillators,meggers, phase sticks, phase rotation meters, digital test equipment, and cable locating and fault-finding equipment. Uses block and tackle, hoists, winches, or other lifting and pulling equipmentas necessary. Maintains, and accounts for tools and equipment required to accomplish assignedduties. 10% Performs Other Duties as Assigned.
