THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 5 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN, Position Description Number PDT6374000 and is part of the MA ANG 102nd IW, National Guard. This is a Non-Bargaining Unit position. Selected applicant MAY BE eligible for a recruitment incentive not to exceed (25%) of the annual rate of basic pay.
1. Installs, modifies, tests, repairs, and maintains transformers, converters, regulators, cables,switches, circuit breakers, mechanical and electronic systems, and other circuit elements found insubstations. Adjusts relays and control equipment to obtain specified voltage, current, time delay, and other characteristics for appropriate holding, tripping, or other operational functions.Constructs and installs rigid conduits. Pulls in conductors, assembles bus bars, and phases out andconnects conductors. Cleans, adjusts, and repairs electrical equipment such as air and oil circuitbreakers and remote-control supervisory equipment. Checks condition of transformers, switches,capacitor equipment, and cables. Checks transformer operating temperatures and voltage atsecondary terminals and makes repairs to defective, loose, or corroded connections. Trainsand/or guides lower graded or less experienced employees as required. Ensures tasks areperformed in compliance with National Electrical Safety Codes. With few exceptions, accuratelydetermines and uses procedures, materials, equipment, and sequences that are acceptable foraccomplishing assigned tasks; and complies with established codes and directives. Routinelyperforms tasks in a timely and efficient manner. 25% 2. Installs, modifies, connects, inspects, and repairs overhead and underground electricaldistribution lines. Services lines, breakers, disconnect switches, transformers, insulators,grounding systems, fuses, poles (metal and wood), relays, meters, lightning arresters, cathodicprotection systems, traffic lights, street and floodlight systems, airfield lighting systems, andpower supplies. Strings wires and hoists conductors up to the cross arms. Pulls wires to propertension or sag based on space, length, type, and size of conductors, prevailing temperature, andloading district. Installs and pull cables underground from source of feed-through ducts. Installspoles and replacement of cross arms. Provides technical assistance to lower-grade or lesserexperience employees as required. Ensure tasks are performed in compliance with NationalElectric Safety Codes. Almost always perform repairs. modifications, connections, and/orinstallations in a timely, efficient, and complete manner. With few exceptions, ensures tasksperformed are following accepted trade practices and procedures. 25% 3. Troubleshoots distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment. Makesemergency repairs and substitutions of power lines and equipment, sometimes working ondistribution systems when they are energized. Troubleshoot overhead and underground cablesystems to locate shorts, opens, grounds, electrolysis damages, capacitance imbalances, or cablebreaks. Locates and marks electrical underground utilities prior to excavation. Checks groundwire connections and cables for cracks, breaks, and corrosion. Routinely provides reliabletroubleshooting of distribution circuits and generating and controlling equipment to locate andcorrect the causes of outages and improper operations. Almost always accurately locatesbreakdowns and trouble spots on distribution lines by power failure reports, line inspections, anduse of various electrical testing instruments. 20% 4. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations andmaintains a safe and clean work environment. Frequently works on high voltage electricalsystems when they are "hot," using necessary safety equipment, methods, and precautions. Usesand assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Consistently operatesequipment in a safe manner, applying established safety rules and regulations to minimize minorviolations and to avoid major violations due to employee error or negligence. With rareexception, promptly informs the supervisor of any accident and/or damage to supplies orequipment or of any observed unsafe practices and/or procedures. 20% 5. Uses and maintains various hand and power tools and test equipment such as oscillators,meggers, phase sticks, phase rotation meters, digital test equipment, and cable locating and fault-finding equipment. Uses block and tackle, hoists, winches, or other lifting and pulling equipmentas necessary. With few exceptions, properly uses, maintains, and accounts for alI types of toolsand equipment required to accomplish assigned duties. 10% Performs other duties as assigned.
