The Health System Specialist (Credentialing & Privileging) is assigned to the Medical Staff Office, which is under the Chief of Staff, and is responsible for providing administrative and technical direction and support to the C&P operations. The C&P Specialist is aligned to and supervised by the C&P Manager. The incumbent is responsible for collecting relevant data and making informed decisions to ensure qualified health care professionals are providing appropriate care in appropriate settings.
Duties include but are not limited to: Performing credentialing and privileging functions for licensed independent practitioners (LIPs) and/or other healthcare providers in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation standards, and healthcare policies. Reviewing credentialing applications for completeness and ensuring required primary source verifications are obtained, including education, licensure, certifications, training, work history, references, malpractice history, and adverse actions. Utilizing credentialing databases and electronic systems (e.g., VetPro, NPDB, FSMB, ECFMG, FCVS, AMA, or similar credentialing systems) to process and maintain credential files. Coordinating the appointment, reappointment, privileging, and clinical privileging process while ensuring compliance with established timelines and regulatory requirements. Preparing credentialing and privileging files for review by Credentialing and Privileging Committees, Medical Executive Committees (MEC), Professional Standards Boards, or other governing bodies. Interpreting and applying policies, directives, medical staff bylaws, Joint Commission standards, VHA directives, and credentialing requirements related to provider appointments and clinical privileges. Communicating with providers, service chiefs, credentialing staff, Human Resources, and external organizations to obtain required documentation and resolve credentialing deficiencies. Maintaining accurate credentialing records, tracking provider appointments and expirations, monitoring required documentation, and ensuring confidential handling of sensitive information. Assisting with audits, accreditation surveys, quality assurance reviews, and reporting activities related to credentialing and privileging programs. Preparing correspondence, reports, meeting agendas, minutes, and other administrative documents supporting Medical Staff Office operations. Qualifying experience must demonstrate the ability to independently organize work, manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, maintain attention to detail, and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Preferred Experience with the following is highly desirable: Veterans' Health Administration (VHA) credentialing and privileging processes. Experience working at a Medical Staff Office. VHA Directive 1100.19, Medical Staff Bylaws, Joint Commission accreditation standards. VetPro, VistA, Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and other credentialing systems. Managing multiple provider actions while meeting established processing timelines. Interpreting healthcare regulations and providing guidance to providers, supervisors, and leadership regarding credentialing and privileging requirements.
