The position is located in the Wilkes Barre VA Medical Center of the Facilities Management Services under general supervision of the Management and Operations Assistant Foreman. The carpenter is an integral part of Maintenance and Operation section of the Facilities Management Services.
Duties include and not limited: Use and operation of a variety of hand and power tools such as hammers, hand saws, drills, planes, routers, screwdrivers, power nailers and fasteners, glue guns, metal shears, screw guns, power saws, and power sanders and planes. Able to work from sketches, work orders, basic blueprints, and instructions which are complete in terms of type of job required and materials and methods to be used. They are able to perform mill work, construct framing, and make items such as benches, partitions, frames, and tables. They are knowledgeable of woodworking techniques to prevent splitting, chipping, and splintering and of the types and uses of various nails, screws, specialized fasteners, and bonding materials. Construct air and weathertight assemblies. Work Schedule: 7:00am to 3:30pm Monday-Friday Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD02155A Physical Requirements: Physical or muscular effort in performing duties incudes but is not limited to; fatigue producing action such as working overhead, lifting, pushing, pulling, crawling, climbing, stooping, stretching, standing, sitting, bending; kneeling, squatting and other potentially uncomfortable positions to accomplish the assigned task. Incumbent may work with and in areas with unpleasant fumes or odors and shall wear assigned Personal Protective Equipment. Strenuous physical effort is required while dismantling and reassembling equipment. The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds, infrequently items over 100 pounds with assistance. The incumbent must work from ladders, scaffolding, etc., where parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard to reach places. Hand dexterity is a critical requirement in completing most tasks. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. There may be exposure to chemicals and the inhalation of harmful fumes from chemicals in oils, gases, etc. Irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract may result from equipment maintenance and/or repairs. Ladder climbing and working in high places is routine. Incumbent must always be very safety conscious.
