This position serves in the Architect of the Capitol (AOC), Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent, House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Facility Operations Division, Mechanical Systems Branch, Mechanical Systems Day Section. The incumbent is an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader and installs, repairs, and modifies air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems that regulate climatic conditions. Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Leader and installs, repairs, and modifies air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems that regulate climatic conditions. Duties include, but are not limited to: Pass on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and get work started by distributing the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the work group; demonstrate proper work methods; ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available and that needed materials are obtained; obtain necessary information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work shift; maintain current knowledge on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives; check work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been followed; report to supervisors on status and progress of work and causes of work delays; and answer supervisors' questions on overall work operations and problems. Run and sustain air conditioning equipment throughout offices and other facilities requiring critical control of temperatures. Make all required mechanical connections in order to secure ventilation and exhaust fans for steadiness and cavitation-free functioning. Fuse chilled water or refrigerant lines to condensers, evaporators, compressors, and controls. Evacuate, dehydrate and charge system with appropriate refrigerants. Check for refrigerant leakages. Reset controls essential to maintain desired temperatures, pressure, and humidity. Locate and diagnose problems in control systems following trouble calls or inspections. Fabricate new and/or repairs parts such as hinges, flanges, pipe joints, and bearing sleeves, which can require welding. Make all necessary adjustments in electrical and pneumatic controls for optimal operation of chilled or hot water valves, booster heaters, pre-heaters, maximum air return from outside, and automatic and bypass volume dampers. Check systems for suitable running cycles, refrigerant and oil leakages, motor and compressor temperatures, belt adjustment and replacement, set points, cleanliness, operations and superheat rotation, and heating protection. Perform other related duties as assigned. To be employed by the Architect of the Capitol in a paid position, an individual must meet one of the categories below: A citizen of the United States; A person who is lawfully admitted for permanent residence and is seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)(B); A person who is admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. 1157 or is granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. 1158 and has filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible; A person who owes allegiance to the United States (nationals of American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Northern Mariana Islands, and nationals who meet other requirements described in 8 U.S.C. 1408); or A person who is currently an officer or employee of the Government of the United States.
